Range Activities
These are basic range safety rules, put in simple words. They don't replace the real BSA Shooting Sports rules or a trained range officer. Cub Scouts only shoot at an official event with trained instructors, never on their own.

Rules of the range
Before anyone steps on the line
BB guns
- Every gun is treated as if it's loaded, always, even if you just checked it.
- The muzzle never points at anything you aren't willing to shoot: not at the ground in front of your feet, not at another person, ever.
- Finger stays off the trigger, and outside the trigger guard, until you're aimed at the target and the range officer says to fire.
- Only load on the firing line, only on the range officer's command.
- Eye and ear protection on before anyone steps onto the line.
- Wait for 'cease fire' before touching a gun again or stepping forward to check targets.
- No horseplay on or near the range, not even pretend aiming.
Bow & arrow
- An arrow is only nocked while standing on the shooting line, facing the targets, and only on the range officer's command.
- Never draw a bow at any angle where the arrow could point at a person.
- Point arrows down-range at all times, even before you're ready to shoot.
- Walk, don't run, to retrieve arrows, and only after the range officer signals it's safe.
- Carry arrows points-down, never in a back pocket or held loose.
- One archer's worth of space on either side of you on the line at all times.
Sling shot
- Sling shots are aimed only at an approved target, never at a person, animal, or anything you don't intend to break.
- Eye protection on before drawing, for the shooter and everyone standing nearby.
- Draw and release only pointed down-range at the target, never a practice draw pointed sideways or up.
- Only one scout on the line at a time, everyone else stands back behind the safety line.
- Check ammunition (steel or clay shot) is the type your specific sling shot and target are rated for.
