Ga Ga Ball

A camp and playground classic: low-impact dodgeball played in a pit. No screen needed; grab a pit and a soft ball to actually play.

Setup

  • A hexagonal or octagonal pit (a portable inflatable/PVC pit works great for a pack event; a roped-off circle works too).
  • One soft foam or rubber ball, no hard playground balls.
  • Everyone starts with a hand on the center ball, or the ball starts on the ground at center.

How to play

  1. Start each round with three underhand taps of the ball ("Ga, Ga, Ball!") before anyone can hit it hard.
  2. Hit the ball with an open hand only, no catching, holding, kicking, or two-handed hits.
  3. A ball caught out of the air on the fly (before it bounces) is out for whoever hit it, a nice comeback move.
  4. Once you're out, step outside the pit and wait for the next round.

You're out if…

  • The ball hits you below the knee, directly or off the wall.
  • You touch the ball with anything but an open hand.
  • The ball leaves the pit and you were the last one to touch it.

Winning

  • Last scout standing in the pit wins the round.
  • For a big group, play multiple rounds so everyone gets a turn back in.

Den-friendly variations

  • Younger dens: allow hits above the knee too, and skip the fly-catch rule.
  • Big group: split into two pits and run a bracket.
