Official Pinewood Derby Rules
Update the location and date here each year before the flyer goes out (edit content/pinewood_derby.yaml to save it for good).
Cars may be adjusted and checked in at the den meeting prior to the event. Open class cars can be checked in anytime prior to race day.
The use of alcohol or tobacco products is strictly prohibited at all Scout functions.
Pinewood derby cars are simple, small models of specified dimensions. Each car is created, carved, sanded, painted, and assembled by the scouts, under the guidance of an appropriate adult. The cars are gravity powered and run down a regulation aluminum track.
General Rules
- All participants must build a new car each year. Cars used in a previous year will be disqualified. Pre-built or purchased cars are not allowed.
- The overall length of the car shall not exceed 7 inches.
- The overall width of the car shall not exceed 2 3/4 inches.
- Maximum height is 3 inches, the standard BSA kit limit, so cars aren't disqualified if they advance to a district or council race.
- The car must have 1 3/4 inches clearance between the wheels.
- The car must have 3/8 inch clearance underneath the body so it does not rub on the track.
- Wheels can be trued and polished, but they cannot be rounded or beveled. Wheel physical appearance cannot be altered.
- All four wheels must be in contact with the track surface.
- Axles must be the nail type provided in the official pinewood derby kit. Axles may be sanded or polished to remove any sharp edges or imperfections.
- Axle nails must be installed straight and may not be bent.
- Once a car passes inspection and is entered into the race, only race committee members may touch it.
- If the car loses a wheel or is otherwise damaged, the racer shall have 5 minutes to make repairs.
- Each car must pass inspection by the official inspection committee before it will be allowed to compete.
- The inspection committee has the responsibility to disqualify those cars that do not meet the rules.
Derby Weight Rules
- The car shall not exceed 5.0 ounces.
- Anything can be used to add weight to the car, but no melted lead or mercury.
- The official race scale used at check-in shall be considered final.
- No loose materials of any kind are permitted in or on the car. All added material must be securely attached to the car.
- No springs, shocks, batteries, or tiny motors that help with speed.
- No starting device is allowed.
- No lubricating oils or grease may be used. Axles may only be lubricated with powdered graphite.
